Brummitt accepted to Virginia Tech

Please congratulate Logan Brummitt on his recent acceptance to Virginia Tech.  Way to go Logan!

A Look at Virginia Tech Traditions

Here is the answer to that oft-posed question, "What's a Hokie?" and an explanation of other Tech traditions.
What is a Hokie? The origin of the word "Hokie" has nothing to do with a turkey. It was coined by O. M. Stull (class of 1896), who used it in a spirit yell he wrote for a competition.
Here's how that competition came to be held. Virginia Tech was founded in 1872 as a land-grant institution and was named Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College. In 1896, the Virginia General Assembly officially changed the college's name to Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College and Polytechnic Institute, a name so long that citizens shortened it in popular usage to VPI. The original college cheer, which made reference to the original name of the institution, was no longer suitable. Thus, a contest was held to select a new spirit yell, and Stull won the $5 top prize for his cheer, now known as Old Hokie:
Hoki, Hoki, Hoki, Hy.
Techs, Techs, V.P.I.
Sola-Rex, Sola-Rah.
Polytechs - Vir-gin-ia.
Rae, Ri, V.P.I.
Later, the phrase "Team! Team! Team!" was added at the end, and an "e" was added to "Hoki."

R.S. Pullen and R.T. Gray gave the original 10-acre site. The institution opened on October 5, 1892 with a student body of 198 and a faculty of 15 — and the final enrollment reached 223 at the end of the first year. Garibaldo-Valdez accepted to Queens University of Charlotte

Please congratulate Ramon Garibaldo-Valdez on his recent acceptance to Queens University of Charlotte.  Way to go Ramon!

Community Service

At Queens University of Charlotte, we believe that an education should not just lead to a job, but to an understanding of what it takes to be a responsible citizen - in our communities and in the world at large.
Our Core Program is organized around the theme of ethical issues from the ancients to the moderns.  Seniors take a capstone seminar called "Ethics," which pulls together all the elements from the previous three years: course work, the internship and the study tour abroad.  The entire program asks students these questions: What does it mean to be a good person?  What does it mean to be a member of a larger community?
To go along with what we teach in class, Queens sponsors numerous service and volunteer activities throughout the year.  In all that we do with our students - both inside and outside the classroom - we try to reinforce the university motto: "Not to be served but to serve."  We are active in Habitat for Humanity and "Room in the Inn," tutoring young children, and caring for the sick and infirm, among many other opportunities.  We even award a Community Service Scholarship which gives a $2,300 tuition grant in exchange for 200 hours of service work in Charlotte per academic year.  Ask your admissions counselor for more details on these and other opportunities.
Commitment to service is a large part of what Queens is all about. If you are not inclined toward service when you first come here, we hope you will be before you leave.

December 18, 2011 | Leave a Comment
BUIES CREEK – Campbell University’s fall 2011 commencement served as a tribute to the U.S. military in several ways Saturday morning.

Pope Jr. Convocation Center – included several graduates who have either served or will serve in the military, and the commencement address was given by one of Fort Bragg’s most highly decorated officers.
