Ruettgers accepted to Western Carolina University

Please congratulate Taylor Ruettgers on her recent acceptance to Western Carolina University.  Way to go Taylor!
Heritage & History
WCU was founded in August 1889 as a semi-public secondary school and chartered as Cullowhee High School in 1891. The founder, Professor Robert Lee Madison, wanted to provide an education for the young people in the region and train teachers to spread education throughout the western part of the state. In 1893 the Legislature designated the school as the first publicly funded normal school.
Over the next 40 years, the school expanded its curriculum and evolved into a junior college, and in 1929 it was chartered by the legislature as a four-year institution under the name Western Carolina Teachers College. Often called “the Cullowhee experiment,” Madison’s idea became the model for the other regional colleges in the state.
The demand for the liberal arts and programs in other areas of learning led to an expansion of the school's offerings. Postgraduate studies and the Master of Arts in Education degree were added to the curriculum in 1951 after several decades of rapid growth and sweeping changes. In 1953, the name Western Carolina College was adopted.
In 1967 the institution was designated a regional university by the North Carolina General Assembly and Western Carolina University was given its current title. And, on July 1, 1972, WCU became a member of the University of North Carolina system.
Adjacent to the Great Smoky mountains, WCU has a commitment to the rich traditions of the Appalachian and Cherokee cultures. Its Mountain Heritage Center, Cherokee Center, and Craft Revival Project reflect this influence—at the same time providing irreplaceable educational resources for the region.
The Millennial Initiative will be a knowledge enterprise zone where university faculty and students, private industry, and government partners conduct research and development into scientific and technological innovations that have commercial applications. WCU continues its promise to the region by giving students intensive, hands-on educational opportunities while simultaneously promoting economic development.

Staton accepted to Averett University

Please congratulate Federica Staton on her recent acceptance to Averett University in Danville, VA.  Way to go Federica!
Founded in 1859, Averett has a long history preparing women and men to be leaders in their careers and in their communities.
Averett began as a school for young women at a time when educating women was not a popular idea. That spirit of innovation has continued as we were among the first in Virginia to create an accelerated program for working adults and are among the select few in the nation to offer bachelor's degrees in aeronautics and equestrian studies.
This history of Averett offers a glimpse of where we have been and perhaps a hint of where we are going.
We hope you enjoy your journey.

Davis accepted to BYU

Please congratulate Christiana on her recent acceptance to Brigham Young University.  Way to go Christiana!
The university traces its roots to Utah's rich pioneer heritage. The original school, Brigham Young Academy, was established Oct. 16, 1875, on a little over one acre of land in what is now downtown Provo. At that time, Brigham Young, president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, charged that all secular learning at the institution should be fused with teachings from the scriptures. Speaking to Academy Principal Karl G. Maeser, President Young said: "Brother Maeser, I want you to remember that you ought not to teach even the alphabet or the multiplication tables without the Spirit of God." BYU has remained true to that original charge.
Despite steady growth during its early years, the Academy was threatened by a series of financial and physical setbacks. With the help and sacrifice of Abraham O. Smoot, the campus moved in 1891 to new facilities on University Avenue.
The Academy's curriculum strengthened and enrollment grew. In 1903, the name was officially changed to Brigham Young University. Work began in 1909 on the Maeser Memorial Building, the first of many structures on the university's present site.
Successive administrations oversaw the university's growth in the number of buildings and the size of the student body. The university's academic development was signified by the inauguration of the school's first doctoral program in 1957. With the help of its committed presidents, BYU has continued to grow, refine its mission and pursue excellence in all areas.
Today, under the leadership of President Cecil O. Samuelson, the university remains dedicated to the integration of academic excellence with faith in Jesus Christ and His restored gospel.
