You only get one chance at your high school GPA (grade point average)!
The single most important piece of information that colleges and universities evaluate is your high school grade point average (GPA). Here's the kicker - you only get one chance to earn your high school GPA. You can always take more college courses to better your "college" GPA, but you only have one shot at your high school GPA.
There are two types of GPAs. There is "weighted" and "unweighted." Grades in honors level and advanced placement level courses earn extra quality points as compared to standard or regular level courses. For instance, an "A" in a standard or regular level course earns 4.0 quality points. An "A" in an honors level course earns 5.0 quality points. An "A" in an advanced placement level course earns 6.0 QPs. The grade of a "B" in each of the three levels of courses earns 3.0, 4.0, and 5.0 QPs respectively and so on for Cs and Ds. The letter grade of an "F" earns no QPs at all, ever!
In calculating either the weighted or unweighted GPA, you must include any course grades of an "F." The formula to calculate either GPA is total quality points divided by the total number of courses "attempted." The word "attempted" is used here to clarify that all courses that were taken, regardless of whether they were passed or failed, must be included in your calculation.
GPAs are cumulative in that they include all courses taken in high school. You cannot pick and choose which courses you use to calculate your GPAs. They are all included.
Please leave your comments or questions regarding this issue.

Nicole Sabourin with Carolinas College of Health Sciences visited 10/22/2009
Today we were fortunate enough to have Ms. Nicole Sabourin with Carolinas College of Health Sciences visit with three seniors and one junior. The discussion centered around the types of programs offered, scholarships, rigor of the programs, financial aid, the application process, etc. The students presented many detailed questions. The students learned how competitive the health care programs really are. They also found out that the GPA (grade point average) is vital in the qualification process.
Carolinas College of Health Science’s roots date back to the early 1940’s when hospitalbased
education was offered at Charlotte Memorial Hospital. In 1990, the college opened as an
institution of higher education and was incorporated as an owned subsidiary of the Charlotte Memorial
Hospital Authority, a quasi-public entity. Today it operates as a multi-program, regionally accredited
college supporting the nursing and allied health workforce needs of the greater Charlotte-Mecklenburg
area.
Carolinas College of Health Sciences is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern
Association of Colleges and Schools to award the associate of applied science degree.
To find out about health care careers and which schools across North Carolina offer which programs visit the North Carolina Health Careers website.

Today we also had Ms. Alexandra Thomas visit from North Carolina Central University
This afternoon we had the pleasure of having Ms. Alexandra Thomas from North Carolina Central University visit with three seniors and three juniors. Students asked many great questions and learned a lot of great vocabulary words that will surely help them with their SAT and ACT preparation. North Carolina Central University is committed to equality of educational opportunity and does not discriminate against applicants, students, or employees based on race, color, national origin, religion, sex, age, or handicap. Moreover, NCCU is open to people of all races and actively seeks to promote racial integration by recruiting and enrolling a culturally and racially diverse student population.
Admissions to North Carolina Central University is NOT contingent upon eligibility of financial aid, housing nor contingent on preferred class scheduling. However, students that are admitted early have the best opportunities for consideration of scholarships and financial aid, residence hall assignments, orientation, class registrations and more.
All undergraduate students applying for admission or readmission to North Carolina Central University must complete their application form by June 1 for the fall semester admission and November 1 for the spring semester admission.

Mrs. Meredith Garrett visits from Gardner-Webb University
Today we had the representative from Gardner-Webb University visit with nine seniors and six juniors. Mrs. Meredith Garrett was nice enough to spend a lot of time answering many great questions from our students. At Gardner-Webb, faith and freedom go hand in hand. Anyone interested in visiting Gardner-Webb is welcome. Future students can meet with an admissions counselor who will answer all of your questions about academics, campus life, and financial aid. The Gardner-Webb campus is friendly and busy. A student can’t walk across the Quad without someone (usually a bunch of people) saying “hi.”
Student-athletes appreciate GWU’s 21 varsity sports, as well as more than 20 intramurals.
Gardner-Webb has great things in mind for all of its students. Each student’s beliefs are exponentially strengthened by getting to know the world around them. Faculty members at Gardner-Webb are seasoned academics and consummate professionals. Many have taught at GWU for more than 20 years.
Professors hail from such places as Duke and Columbia, and they love the small class sizes here at GWU (the student –faculty ratio is about 13 to 1). Boiling Springs, NC is a small town close to some big towns. The university is just an hour from Charlotte, which is a world-class city of half a million people.

Halloween Community Service opportunity
Parents of Allergic Kids (PAK) is in need of volunteers for an event they are holding on Halloween morning (Saturday, 10/31 from 10am until noon). It is a Food Free Halloween Carnival for children with life-threatening food allergies. It is a special event that their non-profit support group, Parents of Allergic Kids, does each year since Halloween is difficult for children who are allergic to peanuts, milk, eggs, etc. This year it will be at the St. Matthew Catholic Church in Ballantyne in their Parish Center Gymnasium. They have sent out invitations to their members and already have over 100 kids coming! They are in need of volunteers to monitor the carnival games, temporary tattoos, arts and crafts tables. For people needing community service hours, they will probably need them to come an hour or so before for set-up (8:30 a.m.) and an hour after for putting away the tables, etc. Maybe a total of 4 to 5 hours. If any QGHS students are interested, please see Mrs. Amaral, Mrs. Southerland, or Mr. Cuthbertson. Click here for a map of where the church is located.
